In 1495, three years after the fall of Granada, several Moorish leaders got permission from their Ottoman overlords to sail west to the Americas. They had heard of the expeditions by Christopher Colombus and brought together a force of mostly gunners (and also payed several Spanish turncoats to join them) and sailed with three ships, one larger one and two smaller (imitating Colombus), and sailed southwest. They stopped at Cadiz to resupply, then sailed out for months until they spotted land in what is now Brazil. Confident in their superior weapons, they attacked the Amazonian tribes and assassinated their chieftains. Outraged, the new chieftains attacked the Moors and, although most of them were killed, annihilated the Muslims.
