As the merits of cannons became evident on the battlefield, the demand for both new cannon designs and increased production brought about the need for the Cannon Maker. Unlike the gunsmith, a cannon maker has the space and equipment required to produce barrels of varying lengths and widths, paving the way for the advent of weapons such as the mortar, ribault, or the grand bombard.
