The Abbasid Caliphate 阿巴思王朝The Abbasid Caliphate, A.D. 1174 Summer

The Abbasid Caliphs came to the throne after declaring a revolution against the Umayyads. The core of the revolution was the province of Greater Khorasan (now in Iran and Afghanistan). They successfully destroyed the army of the Umayyad Caliphate in the Battle of Zab River in 750. Following the battle, they seized Damascus, the seat of the Umayyads, and exterminated most (but not all) of the Umayyad royal family. Abu al-'Abbas as-Saffah was declared as the 1st Abbasid caliph. He made the city of Anbar (now in Iraq) the capital of the new Abbasid Caliphate. His empire extended from Iberia to the borders of India and China. When he died, he was succeeded by his brother, caliph Abu Ja'far al-Mansur. During his reign, al-Mansur built Baghdad and encouraged his court to translate the books of the Persians and Greeks. Also during this period, Abd ar-Rahman, a remaining Umayyad prince, escaped to Iberia and established an independent emirate there./n/nIn 751, the Abbasid governor of Khorasan defeated a Chinese Tang Dynasty army at the Battle of Talas. One of the results of this battle was introducing Chinese paper to the Middle East. By then, the Abbassid Caliphate was one of the most powerful and wealthiest empires in the known world./n/nOne of the notable caliphs of the Abbasid period was Harun al-Rashid (grandson of al-Mansur). During his long reign, the Caliphate reached its zenith, in power and in the pursuit of knowledge. He built many libraries throughout the empire. He brought thousands of Greek books to the house of wisdom. The books of Galen and Aristotle were translated from Greek to Arabic. Also during his reign, he launched many successful campaigns against the Byzantines. He paved the roads between the holy cities of Islam in Arabia and Iraq. Following his death, civil war broke out between his two sons, al-Amin (supported by the Arabs) and al-Ma'mun (supported by the Persians). After several battles, al-Amin was captured and beheaded by Taher ibn Hussien (the commander of al-Ma'mun's army). Tahir was made governor of the eastern Abbasid lands (Khorasan and Persia), giving him semi-autonomous rule. Al-Ma'mun's reign is marked by his efforts in the translation of Greek philosophy and science. Al-Ma'mun gathered scholars of many religions at Baghdad, whom he treated magnificently and with tolerance. He sent an emissary to the Byzantine Empire to collect the most famous manuscripts there, and had them translated into Arabic. It is said that, after one victory over the Byzantine Emperor, al-Ma'mun made a condition of peace be that the emperor hand over of a copy of the Almagest. Al-Ma'mun also conducted, in the plains of Mesopotamia, two astronomical operations intended to determine the value of a terrestrial degree. Almanon crater, on the Moon, was been named in recognition of this caliph’s contributions to astronomy. During his reign the famous scholar al-Khwarezmi founded the mathematical science of algebra./n/nAl-Ma'mun's death in 833 marked the decline of the Abbasid caliphate. His brother al-Mu'tasim succeeded him and formed a new army, disbanding the Arab and Persian units and replacing them with Turkish mercenaries and slaves. He built the city of Samara and made it the new capital of the caliphate. He also ended the revolt of Babek al-Khurami in Persia and captured the great city of Amorium from the Byzantines. The power of the Turkish ghilman (plural of ghulam, meaning slave) began to grow. They became the de facto leaders of the caliphate. They killed many caliphs who couldn't pay them their heavy costs. Caliph al-Muhtadi tried to end their hegemony, but he was defeated and executed. During this period, the decline of the central government in Baghdad encouraged many governors to declare their independence from the caliphate. The Tulunids ruled Egypt and the Levant. The Aghlabids ruled much of North Africa. By the end of the 10th century, all the provinces of the caliphate were ruled by independent states./n/nIn 1055, the Abbassid Caliph Al-Qa'im commissioned the Selçuk leader, Toğrül Beg, to recapture Baghdad from the Fatimids. A revolt by Turkish forces under Toğrül's foster brother Ibrahim Yinal north near Rayy and a revolt by Buyid forces in Persia against the Selçuks led to the loss of the city again to the Fatimids in 1058. Two years later, Toğrül crushed the rebellion, personally strangling Ibrahmin with his bowstring. Then he went south and entered Baghdad and restored al-Qa'im. He then married al-Qa'im's daughter. From that time, the Selçuks ruled over the caliphate, giving the caliph no powers. Many Abbasid caliphs tried to gain their independence from the Selçuks, but they failed and they were slaughtered by the Selçuks./n/nNow it's 1174 and the mighty Great Selçuk Empire, which humiliated the caliphs for decades has fallen apart. Will the Abbasid caliph al-Mustadi flourish, improve the economy and gain a foothold on the Iranian plateau? Good relations with the Ayyubids may be necessary to stop the ambitions of your neighbors - the Khwarezmids, crusaders and the Georgians. Will declaring a jihad against the infidel crusaders be a big mistake or a great accomplishment? Do you need more enemies? The remaining Selçuks, the Khwarezmids and the Georgians are on your borders as well. Invading the rebel city of Mosul will be very useful to secure northern Iraq. And remember... you are the caliph, the leader of the umma, the successor of the prophet. The world of Islam is yours and you have a chance to revive the caliphate and perhaps even surpass the power of the early Abbasid caliphs!/n/n
