Khorasani Light Spearmen Long before the arrival of the Parthian knights, or Turkomans, the tradition of spearmen fighting in conjunction with archers was one of the primary means by which the Achaemenids conquered their Persian Empire. Despite the flowering of the marital prowess of the horseman, Khorasan has kept this tradition alive so many centuries later, combining it with the turkomans as the Achaemenids once did with their own light horse. Any doubts of the worth of spearmen in the land of horse and bow were easily dispelled by the conquests of Mahmud of Ghazni, brought forth not only by horseman with bow, but also footmen with spear and bow.
