Makurian Longbowmen There may be little other a weapon so held in the hearts and spirits of Makuria as their longbows. As had the Composite bow been what led the Turks to establish their Seljuk Empire, it was the longbow that kept the Nubians from being part of another's great empire. That empire was the Rising Caliphate, and that loss of the Arabs at the Battle of the Dongola at the hands of the Nubian Longbow was the only major defeat suffered by an Arab Army in the first century of Islamic Expansion.
