Turkish Swordsmen Nomads, usually favoring mounted and archery tactics, sometimes forsake these traditions and welcome the chance for a bloody scrap in melee. Some sultans divided troops into two vague categories: a professional force of ghulams and mercenaries and a force of tribal auxiliaries. While ghulams normally did the work of close combat in the armies of many Sultans, turkomans occasionally had the equipment to fight as infantry, and were very effective at driving out archers. They can also be used to battle other light infantry and levies, but as nomads, they don’t fare well getting overly bogged down.
