Seljuk Askari Horse Archers The armies of the Seljuk Turks could be divided into two groups: The Askaris, a small core of professional soldiers both free men and slave-warriors serving the sultan and major emirs, and the much larger tribal auxiliaries hired for seasonal campaigns. Unlike the tribal auxiliaries, many weapons beyond the bow are utilized including lance, mace, and sword. These Askaris, composed primarily of Junior Ghulams and professional free soldiers, are armed not to serve as shock cavalry but rather heavy horse archers. With heavy lamellar and maille and the addition of a shield, they are more willing and capable in close combat but still best serve at a distance.
