Unit Description |
|
|
These black soldiers were brought from eastern Africa (Modern Tanzania, Somalia), to work in the plantations of southern Iraq. During the 9th century they rebelled against the caliphate, but their insurgency was Crushed by Prince Al Muwafeq, Caliph Al Mutamed's brother. The caliphs began to recognize their strength from then on and recruited many of them in the late Abbasid army. The Zanj Spearmen wear very light Armor, so they always stand in the front line of the Abbasid army to exhaust the enemy.
