Mamluk Heavy Archers Mamluks, a fiercely military and land holding aristocracy, are originally imported slaves from non-Arab regions. They are recruited to serve in the Ayyubid army, and gain their freedom as professionally trained soldiers of the Sultan. While in their garrison, archery competitions are held along with mounted combat practice and many other forms of rigorous and intensive training. This demanding lifestyle makes these men a disciplined force of archers able to quickly dissolve an enemy in showers of arrows and peril.
