Unit Description |
|
|
A nomadic people having lived along the Red Sea since the time of the Pharaohs, the Beja have come to be known by a multitude of names by a multitude of peoples, from ancient Greece to Rome and Byzantium, as well as the Arabs and Turks. Throughout the centuries they have remained a nomadic people, experienced upon horse and camel back, watching the rise and fall of empires and dynasties, while ever remaining a potent presence in Egypt and the Sudan. Three tribes consitute the "Beja Proper" or those of the Beja whose origin is Hamitic, or with the ancient inhabitants of North Africa, and not the Arabs or other Semitic peoples. They are the Hadendowa - the most numerous and powerful and those who tend cattle, sheep, and camels, and the Amar'ar and Bisharyyin of whom raise mostly camels.
