Omani swordsmen were originally used to solve disputes between tribes in “Rahza” or competition. The “Rahza” featured a poetry contest, sword dance and most importantly, duels. With the Omani straightsword, or Kattara, and the rhino horn shield, two duelists would fight to the death to solve tribal quandaries. The warriors were highly prized, and they spent most of their time perfecting their art and honing their skills. Once the tribes were unified, however, they became invaluable swordsmen. They are specialists in the military sense and should not be taken for granted.
