Székely Horseheads The Székely are Hungarian speaking ethnic group of mysterious origin, and have their own settlements in Transylvania but also migrated to other areas of the Kingdom. In medieval Hungarian armies the Székely played an important role as a free soldier class - tellingly, a Székely's social status referred to his place under the army banners : Footman, Horsehead or Foremen. They were obliged to produce lightly equipped horse- and infantrymen in times of war, and guarding the borders in times of peace - in exchange for being free of taxes or any Feudal lord. Hailing from the rugged, forest-covered hills of Transylvania, they are unable to afford the expensive heavy armour of a western style knight, and instead stick to their nomadic roots as heavy horse archers. Their light mail or brigandine armour gives them adequate protection while firing their bows, and their unique social structure gives they also have the stomach for close combat.
