Turkoman Crossbowmen Further away from the ancestral lands that disciplined the Oghuz turks into whom they came to be known as, the states neighboring the Turks of Anatolia came to be far more of an influence than the Iranians or Turks of Central Asia. One such feature known to the armies of their Christian neighbors that was well taken to by the Turks was the crossbow, which while having already been used by the Seljuks and even Daylami of Northern Iran, gained widespread appreciation by these westward Turks. Simple to use, powerful against the typically better armored Christians, it was especially favored by the banditry that infested the hills and mountains of Anatolia. Able to afford, or having taken as spoils of war, light lamellar armor, these bandits, thugs, and raiders relish in their weapons packing a punch powerful enough to down any meddling soldier from any of the various factions of Anatolia. While their armor does afford them some protection, these men remain those with a preference for loot and less for glory, and while more than capable when fighting at a distance, are not too happy to be engaged in a bloody melee.
