The Order of Friars Minor ("Franciscans") is a mendicant religious order of men tracing their origin to Francis of Assisi. The official Latin name of the Orders of Friars Minor is the Ordo Fratrum Minorum (literally, "Order of Lesser Brothers").
Franciscans insisted on the need for absolute evangelical poverty as a means of personal holiness and imitation of Christ (and St. Francis). The Dominican Preachers, however, saw evangelical poverty as a means to an end. Dominicans were also University trained, in contrast to the sometimes uneducated Franciscans. |
