Axumite Light Cavalry Islam has had relations with Axum since before the armies of the Rashidun Caliphate reached the lands of Nubia. According to ibn Hisham, the 9th century historian of the Prophet Muhammad, when Muhammad faced oppression from the Quraish clan, he sent a small group including his daughter Ruqayya and her husband Uthman ibn Affan to Abyssinia, where the king of Axum gave them refuge and protection, refusing the request of the Quirash clan to send them back to Arabia. Though they returned in 628, six years since the Hijra to medina, many remained in Ethiopia and eventually settled in Negash in eastern Tigray.
