The Malikate of SindhThe Malikate of Sindh, A.D. 1174 Summer

Throughout history, there are lands which held themselves not as the womb of great empires but rather the proving grounds for such powers, a contested ground made fertile in desire from the copious spill of blood upon its soil. These were not the Steppes that gave rise to Hun or Khazar, not the hills of Greece to rise not once but three times. No, these realms were the junctions of worlds; the Levantine coast, the Bosphorus, or Northern India./n/nNorthern India…a battleground upon which countless invasions of foreign powers would come into India, and in a few cases native powers come into it from India’s interior. It was since ancient times that battles have been fought on the plains of this realm for the immense wealth of the sub-continent, a siren’s song to bring invaders far and wide to the banks of the mighty Indus. Greeks, Persians, and Nomads of horse and bow saw fit to sweep down and seek to conquer, as the banditry of the future Turks was not yet known./n/nIt would be these nomads of the steppe, of Iranian Kushan and Saka stock as well as Hephthalite Hunnic blood, that wails of despair and ballads of chivalry would be sung. For as always, the lands of India would take from its invaders far more than had been taken away. Blood spilt of indigenous and invader alike would mix and give rise to the Rajput Clans, who would stand against the tide of Islam when not standing as proud feudal warlords./n/nBut the tale of the Soomro Maliks of Sindh would not begin simply with the Rajput Clans, but rather come about as a synergy of the Soomro Rajputs and the Arab Invaders. The first arrival upon the realm at the mouth of the Indus by the Muslims would occur in the twilight following the death of the Prophet, yet it would be under the Umayyad’s brilliant 17 year old general Muhammad bin Qasim that Sindh was truly brought into the fold of the Islamic world. Yet even as Arab rule would linger in Sindh for 3 centuries, it would be a fusion and not a domination of cultures that occurred, centered upon cosmopolitan city of Mansura./n/nIt would be in the years of Arab dominion that the Soomro would ascend to where they are today as the Maliks of Sindh. A Rajput Clan once Hindi, with many still remaining true to the faiths of their ancestors, the Soomro intermarried with the landowning Arab aristocracy and rose in power. In the early 11th century the Sumra would come to overthrow the Arab rulers of Sindh and re-establish native Sindhi rule to the region, though their dynasty was of mixed Arab and Sindhi ancestry./n/nYet the Soomro’s ascent was not in a vacuum, and as the yoke of Arab rule was thrown away, the pressures of Turkish dominion loomed ever-close. In ever the repeat of history, the new invaders rode down from the steppe, Turks and Persians of Mahmud of Ghazni striking hard at the heretical Soomro. Years may have come since the destruction wrought by the Ghaznavids, yet the ominous signs of the Ghorids are impeccable in repeating the very same tune of history that’s sung its bloody song throughout Northern India./n/nStraddling the Islamic and Hindu world, the Soomro are a tide between rigid earth and crashing sea. Whether that tide will bend below the waves, rise to shelter the earth or come to run straight and strong in denial to either depends upon the Rajput Maliks of Sindh.
